Revealed: The Mystery of Skyrocketing Electricity Costs for Idle DC Charging Stations

As the electric vehicle market rapidly grows, DC charging stations play a crucial role in charging infrastructure, particularly with their fast charging capabilities. However, the issue of soaring electricity costs while the stations are idle has recently become a challenging puzzle. Below is the solution we found for a client.

Not long ago, a customer approached us with a troublesome issue: despite their charging stations often being inactive, their electricity costs were far exceeding expectations. The customer had purchased a batch of 60 kW DC charging stations from a domestic supplier, installed them, and put them into operation as requested. However, due to insufficient demand for electric vehicle charging during the initial operational phase, the majority of the time the DC charging stations remained idle without conducting charging operations.

Over time, the customer was astonished that their electricity bills far exceeded expectations, with significant disparities compared to bills for actual charging activities. After thorough research and discussions with the customer, we finally discovered the root of the problem: the supplier had not equipped their DC charging stations with AC contactors.

AC contactors, an essential component of DC charging stations, serve to disconnect the charging station from the grid when it’s not actively charging to prevent unnecessary energy waste. In this situation, the absence of AC contactors meant that the idle charging stations maintained their connection to the grid. This led to energy loss and waste, resulting in high electricity expenses.


To address this issue, we provided the customer with a comprehensive solution, including the supplementary installation of AC contactors, optimization of standby power consumption of the charging stations, and the development of more effective energy management strategies. Through these measures, the customer successfully reduced energy consumption during standby, effectively controlled electricity expenses, and maximized overall charging station efficiency.


This case vividly illustrates the significance of technical implementation and detail-oriented management in the new energy industry, bringing valuable lessons.
